Key Notes

  • Not every cracked screen needs immediate replacement, minor cracks can be used safely for months.
  • Repair makes sense when the phone is under 2 to 3 years old and performs well overall.
  • Buy a new phone if repair costs are close to upgrade costs or multiple issues already exist.
  • Simple rule: if screen repair is under 30 to 40 percent of the phone’s value, fix it.
Repair the Cracked Screen or Buy a New Phone? Most People Get This Wrong

Many people get into this situation where they get confused about whether they should repair their phone screen or buy a new phone. I think no one can state this better than me because I have already been in this situation. I won’t lie, I have helped my friends and family take the right decision as well.

But before I start, I would like to tell you that there are many aspects you need to consider before making any decision. We are going to talk about them one by one so you can have a better view by the end of this blog post.

How Bad Is the Crack Really?

The first thing you need to check is whether your phone screen needs to be repaired immediately or not. This depends on how major the crack is. If it’s a hairline crack, people do use it for months and months without facing any major issues.

However, if your phone screen has completely gone black, has dead touch zones, black spots, flickering, or the glass has shattered, then these are serious issues. In that case, you should get your screen fixed immediately. These days, phones have become an essential part of our lives, and without a phone, things become tough.

These types of damages can also cause internal part damage more quickly. Along with the screen, you may need to fix other parts as well, which increases the overall repairing cost.

Now, we have filtered out the cases where we need to consider buying or repairing a phone.

But on the base of damages we cannot take decision, we need to consider the repair cost and financial situation of the person.

“TBH, when I see people using mildly cracked screen phones, I feel it’s kind of a flex. It’s like they are not indulged in materialistic things and treat phones like a phone, don’t get attached.”

Let’s compare the cost.

Cost Comparison: Fixing vs Buying New

Now here comes the make or break segment - “Money”.

Screen repair cost depends on phone brands and device models. If you have phone like iphone, Samasung’s or any other premium flagship phone, phone with foldable display, OLED or curve screen then it’s kinds obvious their screen repair cost is very high.

For example:

  • Samsung charges $250 for a $1,000 phone.
  • Apple charges $329 for a $800 phone.
  • Oneplus charges $300 approx for a $700 phone.

This is an estimated idea about screen repair cost, if you wanna know the exact repair cost then you can visit their respective website pages -> Samsung, iphone, Oneplus & Motorola. For Pixel you have to contact to service center.Remember: These costs are excluding tax and job work.

Let’s talk about buying a new phone cost.

You need to consider your phone’s age, resale value, condition because sometimes upgrading to a new phone sounds right decision and sometimes it feels costly.

Below we will discuss both the situation when fixing the screen make sense or buying new phone.

When Fixing the Screen Makes Sense?

Fixing your cracked phone screen is usually the smarter choice if most of the following are true.

  • If you’re phone is recently purchased or you can say less than 2 years old.
  • Your phone has good resale value.
  • If your phone runs smoothly and battery last throughout the day.
  • The repair cost is significantly lower than the repairing cost that would feel nothing.

If you feel the worth of changing phone screen would give your phone another year or two, making it a cost effective decision then you should definitely get your broken phone screen fixed.

Note: The screen repair cost that I have talked above is about original, directly from the brand’s service centre. In the market you can find 1st copy and 3rd copy screens also that would cost so less, obviously as price justifies their quality. On cheap screens you won’t get Always-ON display and In-display fingerprint features.

When Buying a New Phone Is the Better Option?

Sometimes repairing the screen is simply not worth it. There are numerous reasons, which I have listed below. If any three reasons align with your condition, then you can consider buying a new phone instead of repairing it.

  1. If your phone is very old (at least 2-3 years).
  2. The voice coming from the earpiece is low.
  3. The camera becomes worse.
  4. No software updates, phone overheats.
  5. If the battery is already weak.
  6. Overall Performance has slowed down significantly.

If the screen repair cost is close to the price of a new phone, upgrading is usually the smarter move. You get better performance, a fresh battery, improved cameras, and longer software support.

Multiple issues combined with a cracked screen are a strong sign that it is time to move on.

FAQs

Ans. Minor cracks are usually safe, but sharp glass edges and deep cracks can cause injuries and allow moisture to enter the phone.

Q3. Can a cracked screen cause further damage?

Ans. Yes. Dust, moisture, if phone fall again or pressure can worsen internal damage over time.

Q4. Is screen replacement covered under warranty or insurance?

Ans. Standard warranties do not cover accidental damage, but insurance and care plans do.

Final Verdict: Repair or Replace?

Before concluding, here is a quick checklist to help you make the decision more easily.

Quick Decision Checklist

Fix the Screen if:

  • The phone is less than 2–3 years old
  • Touch, display, and performance still work well
  • Battery easily lasts most of the day
  • Screen repair costs much less than a new phone
  • You are satisfied with the phone’s features

Buy a New Phone if:

  • The phone is more than 2-3 years old
  • Battery drains fast or overheats
  • Performance feels slow or laggy
  • Software or security updates have stopped
  • Repair cost is close to the price of your phone’s current value or a new phone.

Simple Rule of Thumb:If screen repair costs under 30–40% of the phone’s current value, fixing it usually makes sense. If it costs more than that, upgrading is often the smarter choice.

Repair or replace decisions vary from person to person. For example, if someone has just bought a phone and the display gets damaged, fixing the screen is usually the most economical choice.

Now, consider another situation. If someone owns a less than one-year-old iPhone 17 Pro Max, the screen repair costs $500, and the trade-in value is around $700–800, then personally, I would consider buying a new budget iPhone instead.

If you do not have insurance or a care plan, repair costs can feel even more painful. Everyone has a different perspective and a different way of making decisions.

The key is to base your decision on value, not frustration. A cracked screen is annoying, but replacing a perfectly good phone can turn into an even bigger regret.
